What is a Docent?

Definition of DOCENT

1   : a college or university teacher or lecturer
2   : a person who leads guided tours especially through a museum or art gallery
      reference per Merriam-Webster.com

Basically it is the person, when you visit a museum, art gallery, zoo or even at say a Showhouse, that guides you thru and/or answers questions you may have regarding the place you are visiting.

In the case of a Showhouse, the docent it often a volunteer who conveys a designer's vision and/or provides information about each room or space in the showhouse.  Docents are usually volunteers that donate their time and labor, and are an integral part of the success of the exhibit, zoo or showhouse they are participating in.  Usually a person will volunteer as a docent because they have a personal interest in the museum collections and/or cause of the given organization, which is often times a non-profit charitable organization.

If you have been or would be interested in becoming a docent I have two showhouses that I am participating in and we are looking for Docents.

Holiday Splendor at Payne Mansion / Selby Gardens

During the month of December I will have a room in the ASID Florida West Coast's  - Holiday Splendor at Payne Mansion / Selby Gardens.   I will be creating a Kitchen that is currently a sun-porch in the beautiful Payne Mansion.  As one of 12 ASID Interior Designers selected to participate we will join together to each create a room within the mansion that will bring a home feel back to this truly charming historic building.  The Holiday Splendor Designer Showhouse is a partnership between the Florida West Coast Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers and the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, one of Sarasota’s finest foundations.
17th Annual Jewels on the Bay / Showhouse

Then, January22-Febuary 29th, I will be part of the 17th Annual Jewels on The Bay - Boys & Girls Club Showhouse.  I have the distinct pleasure of creating a totally remodeled Laundry Room Space in the 1926 "Craftsman Style"  home of David and Ilene Denton.   Proceeds go to benefit The boys and girls clubs of Manatee & Sarasota County.

So get out your calendar and give me a call and I we can get you on the road to being a docent, it is very rewarding and alot of fun hanging out in a beautiful home for a few hours as often as you want while the homes are open.  Call me, Carmen Christensen, at Time2Design 941-378-9964.
